New rules on child car seats to come into force March next year

There are new rules on car seats coming into effect next March, these changes are being made to the weight and height of using backless booster seats. This new rule has left many parents confused as to whether they need to replace existing car seats.

 

Come March next year children weighing over 22kg and also over 125cm tall can use backless booster seats. This change has been approved by the United Nations, and it will be implemented by the EU.

 

According to car seat experts, backless booster seats are not suitable for small children; it provides very little protection as the child is not securely harnessed in the seat.

The new changes will only apply to new backless booster seats; therefore parents do not need to panic and go out and buy a new seat for their child. Parents can continue to use existing seats after the rule changes. It will be manufacturers responsibility to ensure new backless booster seats meet the revised safety standards and are corrected labelled to inform parents.
