All nursery staff to hold Paediatric First Aid training

Government are trying to make it compulsory for all nursery staff to hold paediatric First Aid training. A consultation will take into account views from the sector, parents, health professionals and local authorities.. The plan is to make it compulsory for all nursery staff level 2 or 3 to have paediatric first aid in order to count in EYFS adult ratios.

At present providers must have at least one paediatric first aider on site at all times.If the proposal is given the go ahead it will come into effect from September 2016, this campaign is being backed by Joanne and Dan Thompson, whose daughter died after chocking at nursery in 2012.

A petition containing over 100,000 signature agrees that all nursery staff should hold paediatric First Aid.

Neil Leitch, chief executive of the Pre-school Learning Alliance, said, ‘We warmly welcome the consultation on paediatric first aid requirements, and the fact that the Government is taking proactive steps to ensure that the EYFS framework reflects best practice in this area.
