What is a pre-school?

Some people associate a Pre-School with a playgroup, in today’s society the word Pre-school is more commonly known rather than the word playgroup. A Pre-school provides children from 2 to 5 years with early year’s education and vast play opportunities. Some settings offer childcare as early as 2 where as others offer it for only 3 to 4 year olds, this will depend on the setting. A Pre-school that operates on either a school site or in a church hall etc will be open term time usually offering 3 hour sessions per day. Some will offer shorter or longer sessions again this will depend on the setting. Pre-School’s that are within nurseries will be open all year round offering childcare throughout the holidays.

What will the job involve?

When working in a pre-school there are many roles and responsibilities to follow and adhere to, some of the tasks may involve

  • Setting up the room offering high quality learning opportunities
  • Supporting team members
  • Supporting children to access all areas of the environment including the outdoors
  • Supporting and meeting children’s individual needs
  • Building relationships with all peers including parents
  • Encouraging children to develop their social skills
  • Exploring the environment with the children
  • Extending children’s curiosity
  • Taking care of children’s personal needs
  • Following all health and safety requirements
  • Adhering to all safeguarding polices and procedure
  • Observing and monitoring children’s learning and development
  • Working with other professionals
  • Documenting children’s learning and development, creating progress summaries

What requirements will I need for a job in a Pre-school?

Most employees are looking for a level 3 childcare qualification. You can volunteer as a pre-school assistant and undertake a childcare qualification, you will however need GCSE C or above in Maths and English to progress onto your level 3 training.
