How can early practitioners support children’s Physical Development?
Physical development is one of the seven areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage and is now categorized as one of the Prime areas of learning. Supporting children’s Development in the Early Years will help develop both children’s fine and gross motor skills. Children develop at different rates and practitioners need to tailor activities according to their stage of development not their age.
Physical Development provides children with the abilities they need to explore their surrounding and make those connections with the world around them. Children’s Physical Development first begins with their muscles get stronger and gradually they begin to develop coordination.
There are many activities/resources that practitioners can incorporate into the learning environment to support children’s physical development, for example block play is great in helping develop gross motor skills, where as threading cards can concentrate on developing fine motor skills.
