How to make an interactive fairy garden

Children will thoroughly enjoy spending a considerable amount of time exploring a fairy garden; These magical interactive play areas are fantastic for helping developing children imagination skills. Children can be easily absorbed in their magical adventures, learning news skills as they go along. Fairy gardens are an ideal addition to your outside environment. However, they can also be created inside.

Why not create a magical interactive fairy garden with the children, allowing them to choose what resources to include. Taking children’s choices into consideration are one of the British Values – Valuing children’s opinions.

Making a fairy garden is quite simple, be creative and use either a large plant pot, am old, tyre, or a square raised flower bed. Here is how to make a fairy garden using a large round wooden planter

• Fill the planter will soil.

• If you have a vision in your mind of what you want it to look like, share your thoughts with the children and listen to their views.Deciding the layout of the fairy garden is a beautiful project in its self, as children will be excited to discuss their ideas.

• Purchase some grass plants, lavender plants, moss and other small plants that would be ideal for this project. Make sure these are not poisonous

• Decide where the plants are to go in the wooden planter, then plant these.

• Why not bury some ceramic plant pots on their side half way down in the soil, this will create a magical hideaway for the fairies or goblins.

• Use a round saucer and fill with water, creating a small pond area.

• Create pathways using coloured stones/ gravel.

• From your local garden centres purchase some gnome figures and any other garden ornaments.

The opportunities are endless of what to add to this garden, be creative and don’t forget you can always add new additions to  it at a later stage. Place the fairy garden in an ideal location where children can play with and alongside their peers, developing their personal social and emotional skills as well as their imagination.
