10 simple ways to create dens for children
All children love hiding in dens and waiting for someone to come find them. Why not create this fun experience in your under 2’s room.
Creating dens is not only a fun experience for children it also covers many learning aspects. You may have children in your under twos room that love crawling through tunnels or cardboard boxes. Displaying this type of behaviour is known as a scheme, therefore why not when creating your den have different entrances and exits and add a tunnel as a way of entering the den. Being creative in the design of your den will incorporate many learning opportunities eg add torches to your den, depending on the size of your den have a sing along session in there and take musical instrument in. When it comes to thinking about how to create a den some people use pop up tents where as others may just use material.
Here are a few ways to create dens;
- Use large sheets of fabric, pegs these to parts of your room or pieces of furniture to create that den.
- Using an old clothes Airier attach material to make a den
- Use a large cardboard box
- Use bamboo canes to create a tepee shape and then cover with material
- Outdoors use old pallets to construct a den – ensure this is securely fixed with appropriate fittings.
- Use a foil blanket tent this can be brought already made in the shape of a tent.
- Use tables, place material over the edges of the table keeping one uncovered for the entrance
- Attach a piece of string from one wall to the other ensuring this is high enough so children don’t get caught up in it. Then place material over the string to create a triangular den, you will need to place items in the corner of the den to create the triangular shape tent.
- Using the frame of an old tent or children’s gazebo, drape different material over this to create that perfect den
- Using a plastic outdoor hoop attach fabric to this hoop and attach the hoop high up preferably ceiling height and then drape the attached fabric and if possible took the fabric under furniture to create that den look.
