Families with SEND children receive little guidance on childcare

Lack of information from local authorities about childcare is available for families with SEND children

According to recent research from the Family and Childcare Trust, many families with SEND are given very little information from local authorities about childcare options. This causes barriers for parents when trying to access a childcare place for their child. For families with children with special educational needs and disabilities, it is essential correct information and support is readily available.

It is Local Authorities responsibility as part of the Local Offer to provide families with up to date information about the types of services and support available for children with special educational needs and disabilities.

For parents, it can be increasing stressful when trying to access a childcare place for their child that has special educational needs and disabilities, as all parents want the best for their child. Providing families with information and support about childcare will give them confidence when the times comes to look for a childcare place.

According to the report, some local authorities are providing excellent information. However, they are not providing detailed information and advice that parents need. As a result of this around nine in ten parents with a child with SEND  find it difficult to find childcare. All children should receive early education as this benefits so many areas of their development eg Physical, social and emotional.
It is essential that local authorities nd government work together to ensure parents are given the correct information and are signposted to the support they need for their child to access childcare.
