Using Treasure Baskets in your environment.
PART 4 Some top tips on getting the most out of treasure baskets:
- Find a time that suits the children: For children to get the most out of this type of play find a time that suits them. When children are tied or hungry they are less likely to want to stay at this chosen activity.
- Let children take the lead: This type of play is very much about children taking the lead, however adults do need to sit near and share children’s discoveries.
- Give the children time: Treasure baskets can help children develop their concentrations skills, therefore it is important to give children enough time to explore the objects. Why not sit with the children, share the enjoyment and observe what the children are doing.
- Look, listen and Note: When the children are playing with treasure baskets this is an ideal opportunity to observe children, note down any key elements especially any language. Observations can tell you many things; it is also a good way to evaluate your environment as well as the activity.
- Add new items: This type of play is effective if new objects are added and others removed. Children are fascinated when they find new objects have been added to the mix, this helps children make new connections and learn new skills. Knowing what to add to this play will come from your observations, you will have a good idea of what to add and what to remove
- Use language to support play; During this type of play don’t forget to have an adult close, the adults role is to use language to support the play. Introducing language is highly important in relation to children’s communication and language skills, children relish in learning new words as this helps them communicate with their peers
