Why shouldn’t men work in childcare?
There is still a very clear divide on the amount of men working in childcare compared to woman. People’s attitudes regarding diversity and equal opportunity and social mobility are causing the decrease in the amount of men working in childcare. Why shouldn’t qualified men work in childcare?
One of the reasons why there is such a big debate is that many people refer to childcare as being a woman’s job. Many people don’t consider the qualities men can bring to working in childcare.
Majority of literature regarding careers in childcare is very much aimed at women; however there are many male teachers out there. Thinking of starting a career in childcare can be very daunting for men especially as they are brave enough to even consider studying a childcare course that will be full of women.
For any man considering this route is very brave as they will need to be able to handle the views of others. The comments from others could lead to some men giving up, whereas others will fight to be treated equally.
Showing that your workforce includes men is a great way to showcase a diverse an equal team. Many people ask the question what is the difference in children being cared for by men and women? The question can only be answered by observing children’s interaction with men and observing the benefits in having that male role model.
Many people are worried about the perceptions of parents when in fact you may be surprised that they would like their children to be cared for by both men and women. Having that balance of men and women working in childcare can bring great qualities to the learning environment. Men have certain qualities that women don’t have and vice a versa, therefore more men should be encouraged to work in childcare.
A positive step towards increasing the amount of men working in childcare would be an equal approach to recruiting both women and men in childcare.
