Are you thinking of training to become an Early Years teacher? Those who have trained to become an Early Years Teacher are professionals who lead practice with children aged from birth to five years.
All Early Years Teachers priority is to make sure babies and children are given the utmost care and education possible. They strive in ensuring high standards are demonstrated in their practice and conduct.

How to become an early year’s teacher
The entry requirements are aligned with working with Primary school aged children, therefore students must
- Hold a degree and at least a GCSE C grade (or equivalent) in English, maths and science to
- You’ will also need to pass the professional skills tests in numeracy and literacy
Following on from the completion of the professional skills test students will then need to begin their early year’s initial teacher training (ITT). This will demonstrate that they have met the Teachers’ Standards (Early Years).
The different routes you can train are;
There are four training routes available, with a School Direct option for graduate entry – all options lead to achieving Early Years Teacher Status upon successful completion:
- graduate entry – typically a year of full-time study
- School Direct (Early Years) graduate entry – This allows you to train within a group of schools or nurseries with the expectation of employment once you achieve early years teacher status
- graduate employment-based – a one-year part-time route for graduates working in an early years setting who need further training to demonstrate the Teachers’ Standards (Early Years)
- Undergraduate – a full-time three- to four-year route for those studying for a degree in an early childhood-related subject.
- Assessment Only – taking place over three months, this self funded route is for those that have experience of working with children from 0 -5 yrs and meet the Teachers Standards
